Swimwear advice for dads

TV stylist John Scott has teamed up with Huggies® Little Swimmers® to help dads up and down the country wise up on how to look stylish when swimming with their little one.

The rules

The key rules to remember are:

  • You are out for the day for some family fun
  • You are not out to impress the girls
  • You are not on Copacabana beach strutting your stuff
  • You are not trying to smuggle budgies across the border!!!!

You may want to take into account body shape, but I think the same rules apply if you have the body of a potato, a runner bean or a dream god Adonis!

The fit

If you do want good old fashioned tight-fitting lycra swimming trunks then go for either a wide sided swim brief or a trunk with thigh length legs. There is nothing worse than any body shape squeezing into a tiny pair of micro briefs, unless you are David Beckham! Make sure they are full bottomed - wearing a thong at your local pool is an absolute no no!

My best bet would be loose fitting trunks, with an inner mesh support system. This should come with an elasticated waistband with ties for extra safety.

Useful tip

Invest in swimwear with pockets, either hidden on the inside or Velcro-flapped deep pockets on the legs. This will make it easy for you to store the goggles when not being used or simply keep the locker key safe.

Colours

This is really a matter of personal taste. I advise my clients to avoid the big floral print shorts if they are going to be swimming at their local pool - they may look good on a hot sandy beach, but they won't look as hot at your local swimming pool on a winter's morning.
