Guide - Week 3

  • Whilst getting into the pool, just lay him down poolside, you enter first and then lift him in.

"Talk to your baby while entering the pool to give him lots of encouragement - some babies don't like bright lights and unfamiliar noises so it's best to keep chatting."

Philomena Geary, STA Baby Swimming Teacher

  • Cradle your baby close to your body, slowly move around the pool with your shoulders under the water and feet firmly on the floor - gently bounce him up and down.
  • Be natural with your baby. Loads of smile and chat, plenty of eye contact and praise.
  • Repeat what you did in the bath at home. The familiarity makes it easier for him - but keep looking to see if he's enjoying it. If he's cold or not happy, don't push things - just have a warm shower, and get dressed.
  • Build confidence - move your little one from back to front and front to back.

"Every time you begin a new activity, it's great to use a 'cue' which they then recognise moving forward."

Philomena Geary, STA Baby Swimming Teacher

Use words for each activity - like 'bubbles', 'kick' and 'splash'.
  • Have fun with a favourite bath toy. Hold it out of reach, and he'll try to grab it. Hold it over his head, and he'll look up. See how he reacts when you sprinkle water gently over the back of his head!
  • Encourage your baby to hold onto the poolside and clamber out. Use a woggle or a float to encourage your baby to hold on and splash. Sit him on a float and zoom him around the pool. If it feels like fun, do it!
