Guide - Week 2

  • Find your pool here. The pool finder helps you get a pool where you and your baby can enjoy yourselves. Right temperature, right depth, that kind of thing. And remember, it's never too early to start.

"Parents are often worried about ensuring their babies have had their immunizations before heading for the pool but the current guidance from the Department of Health says that you can take your baby swimming at any age."

Philomena Geary, STA Baby Swimming Teacher

  • Do a dry run first to check out the pool. Do you need your own changing mat? Coins or token for the locker? Get the little details sorted out, and you'll have fewer surprises on the day.

"When you first start going to a public pool, its best go during off-peak times - it makes the entire experience less stressful and enjoyable."

Philomena Geary, STA Baby Swimming Teacher

  • Get your bag ready the night before. Among all his nappies, wet wipes, cream, baby clothes and towels. Make sure you've got a proper swim nappy like Huggies® Little Swimmers®. And don't forget your own stuff, whatever you do. You wouldn't be the first!
  • A banana or yoghurt make great snacks to fill hungry tummies after a swim. The Department of Health recommends you introduce solids into your baby's diet when they're around six months of age. It's around this point that your baby will require more nutrients than breastmilk alone.
  • Take your time getting to the pool. Top tip - cut out any hassle, pop your swimming costume on under your clothes at home. At the pool, get yourself ready first, then baby.
  • Have a quick warm shower and cuddle your baby before you get into the pool, gently washing warm water over her body.
